How did majoring in English prepare you for your career?
I use my English degree every day in my current position and in my previous positions, whether it's writing, analyzing written works, copy editing, fact-checking or interviewing sources. My English degree equipped me with such a wide skill set that I'm able to incorporate into almost anything that I do on the job.
How has majoring in English enriched your life?
Majoring in English has made me a better writer and a stronger communicator. It also is what led me to find the career path that I am most passionate about, which is communications and public relations.
What advice or insight do you have for VSU alumni and students interested in your career field?
My advice is to participate in as many internships as possible, even after graduation. This can really help you explore different careers that your major applies to and ultimately help you decide what career path you want to pursue if you are unsure. English is such a broad major, and there's really so much that you can do with an English degree. The skills you'll gain as an English major transfer to a lot more careers than you'd imagine.
I also recommend pursuing a master's degree once you decide which career path you want to follow. Because English is so broad, a master's program allows you focus in on one area that you feel most passionate about and equip you with the skills and hands-on training in that particular area that you may not have gotten from your English degree. For example, after participating in several public relations internships, I knew that communications/PR is the career path I wanted to take. So, I got my master's degree in public relations & corporate communications, which has really benefited me in the field I work in.
